A Journey Shaped by the Wild: My 22 Years at Cinnamon Wild Yala

By Sudath Gamage

I joined Cinnamon Wild Yala 22 years ago, when it was known as Yala Village Pvt Ltd, beginning my career as one of just three pool attendants at the resort. It was Sri Lanka’s 56th Independence Day, and I was young, hopeful, and eager to take my first steps into the professional world. At the time, I did not realise that this place would shape not only my career, but also my identity and purpose.

Being a resident of the Hambantota District, I experienced the devastating impact of the 2004 Tsunami while working at the resort. It was a period of deep uncertainty for many of us. However, when the resort resumed operations, the commitment and long-term vision of the John Keells Group restored more than a place of work. It revived livelihoods, including mine, and brought stability back to nearly a hundred families who depended on the resort. This experience strengthened my sense of belonging and reinforced my determination to grow alongside the organisation.

After six years as a pool attendant, I recognised the importance of developing new skills to progress in my career. At a time when IT literacy was uncommon in our region, I made a conscious effort to build my knowledge and capabilities. This initiative opened the opportunity for me to transition into the role of outlet cashier, marking an important step forward in my professional journey.

In 2015/16, during a period of organisational restructure, my position became redundant. While this was initially a challenging moment, it ultimately led me towards a role that would define my true passion. With the encouragement and guidance of my leaders, I joined Cinnamon Nature Trails as a Tour Coordinator.

This role deepened my connection to the natural environment that surrounds Cinnamon Wild Yala. Each day brought meaningful encounters with Sri Lanka’s extraordinary wildlife, from observing leopards at dawn to guiding guests through immersive nature experiences. Through this work, I developed a profound appreciation for conservation and the responsibility we share in protecting our natural heritage. I came to understand that my role extended beyond supporting guest experiences — it was also about contributing to the preservation of the environment we are privileged to be part of.

Today, as a proud resident of Kataragama, a husband, and a father, I reflect on my journey with deep gratitude. Cinnamon Wild Yala and the John Keells Group have provided me with opportunities to grow, adapt, and discover my purpose. My experience stands as a testament to how the organisation supports its people, enabling them to build meaningful careers while contributing to something greater than themselves.

Over the past 22 years, I have grown alongside Cinnamon Wild Yala, and I remain proud to be part of a Group that continues to shape lives, strengthen communities, and operate in harmony with the wild.
