From Shuttle Smashes to Career Milestones: My JKH Journey
By Yasmitha
I joined the John Keells Group four years ago, beginning my journey in 2021 as an intern at Jaykay Marketing Services. That role offered invaluable early exposure to the Keells supermarket chain, where I first experienced the scale, energy, and operational excellence that drive the business.
In 2022, I moved into the Industrial Relations department in HR as an Executive. This was where I gained hands-on experience in labour relations, workplace safety, and employee wellbeing. The learning curve was steep, but the experience was eye-opening, giving me a deeper understanding of the real-world challenges and responsibilities in HR. That first step wasn’t just the beginning of my career – it was the start of a journey that would shape who I am today.
In 2024, I embraced a new chapter through an intercompany transfer to John Keells CG Auto (JKCG). Entering a completely new business vertical for the Group meant there was much to learn, but it also gave me the chance to broaden my horizons. I not only learned about the automotive industry but also about its unique talent requirements, while further developing leadership skills and finding new opportunities to contribute meaningfully.

As an HR professional, I’ve realised that people are at the heart of everything we do. The Group’s inclusive environment has taught me the importance of empathy in leadership, the power of listening, and the value of trust. Every project, every conversation, and every challenge has sharpened my skills, built my confidence, and helped me approach problems with clarity and purpose.
Beyond my professional responsibilities, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the Group’s Sports Coordinator for Badminton. This role has not only allowed me to represent the Group at Mercantile Badminton Tournaments but also to organise the Intercompany Badminton Tournament, bringing colleagues together in the spirit of camaraderie and healthy competition after a six-year hiatus. I’ve also had the opportunity to compere at company events, an experience that has greatly improved my self-confidence and public speaking skills.
The Group has also encouraged me to give back through volunteering. One of the most meaningful experiences was being part of the Cinnamon Rainforest Reforestation Project, where I played a small role in reforesting land in Suduwelipotha, near Sinharaja.
Above all, what I treasure most are the connections I’ve made along the way; the mentors who guided me, the colleagues who inspired me, and the friends who supported me. Looking ahead, I know that the John Keells Group will continue to be the foundation on which I grow, both personally and professionally.
